Lee's Discount Liquor Breaks Ground
Lee's Discount Liquor Pours Into Northern Nevada with West Wendover Store
On the cold afternoon of Tuesday, December 20th, the Ground Breaking ceremony was held for the newest in the Lee’s Discount Liquor family of stores. This new store will be located at 1355 Wendover Boulevard here in West Wendover.
The ceremony was well attended by representatives of Lee’s Discount Liquor as well as BreakThru Beverage Group and Ascent Construction, Inc., along with current and former City of West Wendover Officials and Staff and some folks from the general public who were all excited in seeing this new commercial enterprise enter our community.
Mr. Lee, with his family in tow, immigrated to the United States from Seoul, South Korea in 1980. After their relocation Mr. Lee let loose his entrepreneurial spirit and eventually took aim at the southern Nevada retail liquor market opening his first liquor store in Las Vegas in 1981. For the last 35 years the Lee family which includes Mr. Lee, his son Kenny and daughters Annie and Tina, have worked very hard and been extremely dedicated to the growth of that business turning it into one of the largest commercial enterprises in southern Nevada. Lee’s Discount Liquor is in fact the largest liquor retailer in Las Vegas with over $100 million in annual sales, and now Mr. Lee has set his sights on northern Nevada. “Where better to start our expansion into northern Nevada then in West Wendover”, Mr. Lee remarked at one point when first meeting with then Mayor Emily Carter and City Manager Chris Melville in mid-2015. You are a community that matches the spirit of what Lee’s Liquor is all about, starting small, working hard and making something big happen. A similar story for West Wendover, which started out as just a small stop on a dirt highway nearly a century ago and has now become a growing destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
Just prior to the group grabbing their shovels and making the dirt fly, Mayor Daniel Corona commented, “We are very pleased to have Lee’s Liquor joining our business community and are excited that they are going to be part of our continued future growth here in West Wendover”. He was then followed with comments by Mr. Lee and City Manager Chris Melville among others. Mr. Lee said how excited he was to be coming to West Wendover and that this new store was going to be a project that everyone could be proud of and that he really believes in West Wendover and looks forward to many years of success here. City Manager Melville said, “Mr. Lee, though it has taken some time for all the pieces of your project to come together since our first meeting nearly 18 months ago, what we do know, especially in West Wendover, is that the best things never come easy and they take a great deal of work, patience and perseverance in order to be accomplished, and you Mr. Lee are a great example of that, with the tremendous business that you have created over the past several decades and now West Wendover will be part of your story, we warmly welcome you to West Wendover.”
The West Wendover location will be Store No. 21 for Lee’s Discount Liquor. Project construction will be underway the week after the Christmas holiday with completion of the $5.6 million 26,000 sq.ft. store scheduled for late July 2017, according to Bob Murri, Vice President of Ascent Construction, Inc., the general contractor on the project. “We are very excited to be involved in yet another great West Wendover project,” Mr. Murri commented during the ceremony, “with Lee’s Liquor joining the group of multi-million dollar businesses you already have in your community, you are going to see an even greater change to your business landscape and we at Ascent are happy to continue to be partners in West Wendover and be part of your great future.”
Congratulations to Mr. Lee and his family and we welcome you to West Wendover and wish you great success!
