West Wendover Middle School Project Underway
Elko County School District has begun work on what will be the first Middle School in the community.
At the Elko County School Board meeting of December 28, 2016, the Board awarded the $6.5 million dollar project to MGM Construction out of Salt Lake City, Utah. The project architect is Design West Architects out of Meridian, Idaho. Design West Architects was also the architect for the new West Wendover Elementary School which was dedicated this past fall. MGM began work on the project earlier this month with an expected project completion date of late August 2017, preparing the facility for occupancy for the 2017-2018 school-year.
The project includes: A complete renovation of the old West Wendover Elementary School into new classrooms and science lab for Middle School Students which will include 6th, 7th and 8th grades; an expansion at the adjacent gymnasium to house locker room/shower facilities and; two paved parking lot upgrades to increase overall parking for the new facility and for school buses. As a side, the project includes the removal of many of the mobile classrooms which have been located at the facility beginning in the 1980’s when the old Elementary School first opened. Student enrollment exceeded that facility design the first year and has been growing ever since.
With the completion of this project, Elko County School District will have completed educational facility investments in West Wendover over the last two years totaling more than $35 million.
